Our technology team works in small, cross functional squads - forming part of a fun, hardworking and exceptionally supportive team of around 80 engineers. We are looking to hire a Staff Engineer to help equals on its journey towards continual improvement.


About the role

As a Staff Engineer at Equals, you will play a critical role in designing, building, and scaling our payments platform. You will work across the stack, with a focus on backend services in Node.js and frontend components in React, to deliver high-performance, reliable, and secure payment solutions. You will sit in our continuous improvement team, dedicated to resolving challenging problems that arise from customer feedback, technical debt, and bugs. You will be able to work with emerging technologies like Retool to design solutions to internal and external business problems.


About you

We are looking for experienced and ambitious Senior or Lead Engineers looking to step into a Staff Engineering role, or Staff Engineers looking for a new challenge. The person should be comfortable dipping in and out of different problems, juggling priorities and have a ‘Make it Happen’ attitude. This person should also have Payments, Financial Services or other FinTech related experience.

Job requirements

Responsibilities

  • Proven experience working with payments platforms, transaction processing, or fintech environments.
  • Strong understanding of API design, microservices architecture, and distributed systems.
  • Experience in backend development using Node.js, including building RESTful APIs and working with databases.
  • Knows when to utilise emerging low-code platforms like Retool.
  • Experience with AWS.
  • Experience with GitHub Actions.
  • Knowledge of payment processing standards, security, PCI compliance, and risk management.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a focus on delivering scalable, secure, and efficient solutions.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with experience mentoring and guiding junior engineers.
